“January 19th the thermometer hit -49 below zero and if I spit, it would freeze before it hit the ground. I added all the layers of wool clothing I could onto myself plus additional wool socks in my mukluks, which already have one-inch of foam liners. I slept fully clothed and in those mukluks, too. It was so cold some nights in the lean-to that coffee left in a cup would freeze as soon as the fire died down a little bit. I heard on the radio that Tanana, Nenana, Eagle and Fort Yukon were getting the deepest chills. The radio also said water and sewer pipes froze up and cars were stalling in the intersections in Fairbanks. My only thought was ‘I’m really glad I don’t have any of those problems.’ There’s a lot of value to living a simple lifestyle. -58 is cold, but I believed that if I just stayed aware of the dangers, I’d be okay."Ad Options
