Adventure, hardship, heartbreak and ultimate victory are woven through this true story of one man’s modern-day Alaskan homesteading experience. After a series of disastrous events leads to a bitter divorce and destroys a prosperous mid-Western farming life, Travis hits the road in an old flatbed truck. Aimless and aching, homeless, arrested in a string of small towns in the Deep South for being a vagrant and other petty ‘crimes,’ he finds himself on a downward slide until he reads of Alaskan homesteading in a Mother Earth News magazine, and begins to dream of his own land. That dream comes to life in the shadow of Alaskan mountain splendor, where he creates a working homestead from little more than thin air and his own rugged determination and guts. Face-to-face encounters with bears, surviving 60-below zero winters in a tiny dirt-floored lean-to, learning to use dogs as draft animals to get the homestead work done – these are just a few of the challenges he must overcome to carve out a life in harsh sub-arctic Alaska. Interviews, original diary entries, and photos are an important part of the historical record of this homestead.

Many people who have bought the book Building Alaskan Dreams are telling us they are re-reading it. So we asked one of them 'why read it a second time?'
"OK, here’s why people are compelled to read your book a second time: your words are telling their souls what they NEED to hear. It is a story of survival in its rawest form. No preaching. No fancy philosophy. No Dr. Phil., No East Indian Guru. No God in a white, flowing robe. That shit doesn’t appeal to a lot of people. Generations of people on earth have an immature soul that has NEVER been exposed to a world beyond their smart phone. They are spiritually and practically immature to the point that they can’t survive without a grocery store or downloading a pop self-help book when they feel depressed. They are devoid of practical soul-punching, gut-wrenching stories of how to live life and survive and overcome and thrive.
Your book is soul food. And there are thousands of [people] who are so ’soul hungry.’ They have nothing to wake up for. Your story is about a man who literally had nothing left to wake up for either. But Jason pulled together everything he ever learned and fed himself and triumphed. Jason got kicked in the teeth over and over again but emerged with a shit-eating grin! In one little book you gave your readers everything their souls are hungry for and when they are done, they want a second helping! And it’s a second helping (or chance) at life. You planted the seed that tells them, deep inside, that they can survive and thrive.
You got one hell of a product here - a story of pain, survival, dogs, love, adventure - but underneath the wrapper of well placed (and well paced) words it’s an owner’s manual for life."
